Subaru Forester vs Ford Escape:

Which Compact SUV Suits Connecticut Drivers Better?

Discover How the Subaru Forester Surges Past the Ford Escape

Compact crossovers are a hot commodity for Connecticut families. The Subaru Forester is a top choice among compact SUVs, but most Middletown motorists want to compare competitors like the Ford Escape for peace of mind they are making the right purchase.

The Ford Escape excels in several departments to match the stunning Subaru Forester, but Ford's compact SUV doesn't have the off-road chops to match the Forester. New London customers can learn more about how these compact SUVs stack up head to head with the help of Reynolds Subaru.

Price

The Subaru Forester checks in with an MSRP a few hundred dollars cheaper than the Ford Escape. Both starting MSRPs hover around $25,000. The Ford Escape, available with several hybrid models, costs more on upper trims at around $36,000. The Subaru Forester's most popular model - the all-new Wilderness Edition - has a $32,800 MSRP, proving to be a better bargain.

Performance & Fuel Economy

Subaru Forester SUVs share the same engine, a 2.5-liter flat-4 Subaru BOXER® engine delivering 182 horsepower and 176 pound-feet of torque. The Ford Escape, meanwhile, offers three powertrains, but the base engine - a 1.5-liter EcoBoost® turbocharged inline-3 rated for 181 horsepower and 190 pound-feet of torque - doesn't top the BOXER® in the Forester.

Fuel economy ratings range from 44/37 (city/highway) miles per gallon in hybrid models and 100 MPGe (37 miles all-electric range) in PHEV models to 26/31 miles per gallon in non-hybrid Ford Escapes. The Subaru Forester tops those fuel economy ratings by earning 26 miles per gallon on Hartford streets and 33 miles per gallon on Connecticut highways.

Seasonal Driving

It's tough for Lyme drivers to clear obstacles on Connecticut roads with the Ford Escape, offering only 7.8 inches of ground clearance. The Subaru Forester offers 8.7 inches of ground clearance in base models and up to 9.2 inches in the trail-ready Subaru Forester Wilderness Edition.

Ford Escape SUVs offer optional 4WD, but that can't match the Forester's standard Subaru Symmetrical All-Wheel Drive. The Subaru Forester also offers X-Mode® and Enhanced Dual-Function Subaru X-Mode for additional traction. The SI-Drive® (Subaru Intelligent Drive) is an engine management system the Ford Escape can't compare with.

The Subaru Forester is capable of all-season driving on all road conditions, thanks to the Wilderness Edition's rugged design. Exterior cladding, extra skid plates, an anti-glare hood, reinforced roof rails, and all-terrain tires decorate the off-road-ready Subaru Forester. The Ford Escape offers roof racks, but not much else.

Comfort

The Subaru Forester offers Essex families more space, with a total cargo capacity of 76.1 cubic feet, topping the Escape's 65.4 cubic feet. The Subaru Forester Wilderness is more luxurious, offering StarTex® water-repellent upholstery and LED cabin lighting.

Safety & Technology

Subaru STARLINK® Multimedia and Ford SYNC both offer unique tech features, but the Subaru Forester has a superior safety presence. The Escape's Ford Co-Pilot360™ safety suite rivals the Forester's Subaru EyeSight® standard safety suite, but Ford's SUV fails to match the Forester's safety awards.

The Subaru Forester is 2021 IIHS (Insurance Institute for Highway Safety) Top Safety Pick+, earning the highest possible safety rating. The Forester also has an IIHS Superior Front Crash Prevention award for the highest possible prevention rating.

Ford fails to offer any feature like the Forester's Subaru DriverFocus® Distraction Mitigation System. Through the Forester's Subaru STARLINK® Safety and Security connected services, Connecticut drivers can rely on SOS Emergency Assistance and Advanced Automatic Collision Notification.
